If you are a bariatric patient you may have lactose intolerance!
Lactose intolerance is the inability of your body to adequately digest lactose, the natural occurring sugar in dairy products.
Lactose is broken down in your body by an enzyme called lactase. This enzyme decreases with age and lactose intolerance is more noticeable after bariatric surgery.
Having lactose intolerance can interfere with your life! Often it results in nausea, cramps, bloating, gas and sometimes diarrhea. The severity of your symptoms may depend upon the specific food you consume, the amount consumed and how much of the lactase enzyme your body produces.
Tips for health:
If you experience lactose intolerance try to consume a wide variety of bariatric friendly fortified foods like high protein cereals, soy or almond milk and a variety of green leafy vegetables, carrots and oranges.
Many people that are lactose intolerant can still eat yogurt without any symptoms! Especially 0% delicious Greek yogurt because it is high in protein and low in fat and lactose!
